There’s something so romantic about being broke in New York. You gotta do it. You have to live there once without any money, and then you have to live there when you have money. Let me tell you, of the two, the latter is far better. – Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler reflects in the statement above that there is something romantic about not having any money for a while when you live in NYC. When you lack the funds to do the popular, touristy things, you are forced to find entertainment in other ways. For those who live in a NYC apartment with a fitness center, you already have most of your daily entertainment right outside of your door. This is just one of the many things you can do when you live in the Big Apple. Here is a list of other fun things to do that get you out of your apartment, and explore places in the city that you otherwise wouldn’t have thought of to visit if you had the funds to support doing all of the fancier things.
- Brooklyn Brewery Towers
Here you can take a free tour of the Williamsburg’s brewery. The tours are run every Saturday and Sunday and you get to learn about the art of brewing beer.
- Central Park
This is one of the most iconic places to go and spend time for New Yorkers who love the outdoors. The park is huge and the greenery is lovely. There are many different sections to the park and areas where there are events. Coming back to Central Park again and again is a great way to stay entertained on a zero-dollar budget.
- The Chelsea Galleries
For all of the artists, and those who appreciate art, check out the galleries in Chelsea for NYC’s most concentrated area of art galleries. These are free galleries that offer no-pressure purchases.
- City Hall
The government center of New York City has been the City Hall since 1812. You can take tours throughout the marble halls, and witness the place where Abraham Lincoln’s coffin rests. In order to take a tour you have to set it up in advance. So with a little planning, you can have a free history lesson and experience the governmental side of the city.
So if you want to get out of the fitness center at your NYC apartment building, take a tour around the city and try out these four free options.
